GARY ECKHART considers his work to be representational, not photo-realistic; however, he remains true to the shapes, textures, and patterns that initially inspire him. His work starts with a small value sketch before placing a carefully executed drawing of the subject on 300 lb. archival watercolor paper. Gary often relies on the application of numerous, but delicate, applications of layers or glazes of both staining and non-staining permanent pigments.
"I am particularly interested in capturing the rural beauty and rustic quality of the Vermont and New England scene and picturing it in a way that others will look at it with a new vision. I want my work to be visually soothing and comforting while creating strong emotional responses of a simpler, more bucolic life."
Gary resides in Warren, VT where he is co-owner of Moosewalk Studios and Gallery. He is a signature member of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society, the Northeast Watercolor Society, and the Vermont Watercolor Society. He is president of the Valley Arts Foundation, parent organization of the Vermont Festival of the Arts and serves as curator of the annual Green Mountain Watercolor Exhibition. His work has been shown in national watercolor shows and is in collections in both North and South America and Europe.
