JIM SANTOS lives and works in the inspired landscape that is the essence of Vermont. Through his work, we experience the strength and power released in granite and other stone the artist intuitively finds in the heart of the matter. Jim Santos' sculptures are accessible, organic, delightful, and surprising.
Jim Santos works from the premise that "it is the artist's mission to capture the essence of a stone and help it to emerge." This philosopy follows the theory of Monism that maintains that everything in the universe has a soul or sentient life. He says: "Working directly into the stone, I rarely sketch or model beforehand as I find it generates inhibiting constraints and compromises spontaneity. This allows me to sculp what is appropriate for the stone."
Jim Santos studied art history at Columbia as well as studying stone carving under Manolo Pascal at the New School. Additionally, he studied drawing at the Arts Students League in New York.
The winner of numerous prizes in sculpture, he has been featured in galleries accross the northeast from New York to West Palm Beach. Jim Santos has shared his vision with students while an instructor in Stone Carving at the Montoya Sculpture.
