WILLIAM B. HOYT'S exquisitely detailed, classic realism moves us through the depths of both the seen and unseen of the everyday. Prosaic scenes become dramatic pictorial moments of breathtaking beauty. His choices of objects and scenes, often juxtaposed against a backdrop of symbolism, create a new and personal world.
He finds continued inspiration in rural New England, the seacoast, and painterly interiors. Hoyt says: "There is a challenge and a joy in seeing something ineffably beautiful or moving and resolving to make a painting of it. The process has taken many twists and turns since I was fifteen, the stimuli shifting and evolving. The threads of the canvas, the sea, Vermont, family, friends, and Maine have woven themselves inextricably into my psyche and my work."
Born in New Haven, CT, William Hoyt grew up in Newport, Rhode Island where his love of sailing took force. After attending St. George’s School where his art studies were nurtured, he attended Yale where he came under the influence of numerous important artists and mentors: Jack Tworkov, Joseph Albers, and Sewall Sillman. In addition, Hoyt’s studies with Walker Evans, the great photographer, infused Hoyt’s composition and story-telling within his large-scale art works. His work is found in collections internationally.
